Thoth, Hermes, Mercury, Eir, Cynocephalus
Thoth: The history of this Egyptian God Thoth is vast and varied depending on the era (or Dynasty) selected for information.
Ultimately Thoth is the Scribe of the Gods in transferring information in both written as well as spoken form.
With this in mind it's no wonder that Thoth is considered the God of Learning and Wisdom as well.
Much like the Greek association to Hermes, Thoth was attributed to the creation of the alphabet, science, philosophy, mathematics, literature,
magic and basically anything that had to do with the directed effective generation and use of knowledge in any way.
Thoth is depicted with a human body but the head of an Ibis.
The Ibis is a sacred bird for obvious reason that most animals were not only used to sustain life as a food source but the parts of the animal were used in every way possible.
Considered here for the usage of feathers as pens versus the transfer of knowledge in writing.
Other associations in reference to Thoth include his female counterpart Seshat goddess of writing and reckoning.
Thoth was attributed with many different names the original writing (in hieroglyph form) as "dhwty" has a vast number of connotations as well as pronunciations. Tahuti, Jehuti,
Thout, Tout, just to mention a few.
It's apparently the Greek translation of th,o,th that we ended up with the pronunciation that we use today.
Once again a multiplex of information in relation to just one detail is mentioned. Simply placed here for your consideration.
Hermes: This Greek God's associations cover those of Thoth in almost perfect reflection, although in addition, this Greek God also bore an aspect of the guiding the traveler or
the one who crosses over (dies).
Not only associated to the arts of science and knowledge.
There are historical comments made by students of Plato referring to writings that go back as far as 9000 years prior to the teachings of Plato.
In the Islamic texts there is also found reference to the thrice great.
As with the beginning of this chapter the interjection of infinity became immediate.
An intense philosophical and scientific debate could arise at this point about the subject of infinity.
Dealing with the actual number of all combined particles in all of the combined galaxies. This isn't the time for this (futile) debate.
In so many historical documents as well we find this secrecy involved.
There's a long standing historical and philosophical debate concerning whether there was actually a living person named Hermes Trismegistus (thrice great) or whether the
writings associated to this name came from a variety of other authors.
It's considered that this person pre-dated Moses and in some Jewish traditions it's considered that Abraham was taught much of his mysticism from the teachings of Hermes
Trismegistus. Hermes Trismegistus was said to have taught in the high temple of Egypt and fabled to have existed for over three hundred years in the flesh.
The father of alchemy of the mind was also known for the Emerald Tablet which was transcribed in several languages and mentioned in a letter from Aristotle to Alexander the
Great. I've found that the Arabic translation of the Emerald Tablet, which I've listed below, is the most comprehensible, for my tastes.
The Emerald Tablet has been found to exist and is referenced as an existing item in several cultures and translations.
The Emerald Tablet
1. It contains an accurate commentary that can't be doubted.
2. It states: What is the above is from the below and the below is from the above. The work of wonders is from one.
3. And all things sprang from this essence through a single projection. How marvelous is its work! It is the principle part of the world and its custodian.
4. Its father is the sun and its mother is the moon. Thus the wind bore it within it and the earth nourished it.
5. Father of talismans and keeper of wonders.
6. Perfect in power that reveals the lights.
7. It is a fire that became our earth. Separate the earth from the fire and you shall adhere more to that which is subtle than that
which is coarse, through care and wisdom.
8. It ascends from the earth to the heaven. It extracts the lights from the heights and descends to the earth containing the power of
the above and the below for it is with the light of the lights. Therefore the darkness flees from it.
9. The greatest power overcomes everything that is subtle and it penetrates all that is coarse.
10. The formation of the microcosm is in accordance with the formation of the macrocosm.
11. The scholars made this their path.
12. This is why Thrice Hermes was exalted with wisdom.
13. This is his last book that he hid in the catacomb.
Now the debates of this tablets existence are as futile as the debates of the bible stories. The real value is the information and its correspondences.
What does it say? How does it relate? What's important? Why?
Mercury: This Roman God, as mentioned, deals directly with communication. Messenger. The transfer of data. The gift of information.
Also grain trade (also possibly related to this Herb Mercury) and not only commerce but also an abundance of commerce.
He wasn't a part of the earlier hierarchy in Rome and was more adopted, later, into the realm, from the pantheon of the Greeks.
In a letter Julius Cesar wrote that this god was very popular in Britain and Gaul.
A wide variety of cultures attributed a number of add-ons to the name of Mercury in relation to their own existing Gods, as the Germans did.
So Mercury also became associated with the hunt as well. In this way also related to the prosperity of the clan.
So you can see that Mercury evolved into a wide variety of types of Mercury.
Mercurial symbols are often displayed on the temple items of the ceremonial worker.
That is to say that of you are fashioning your own temple tools or selecting symbols for certain reasons that the symbol for Mercury is known to be widely applied and results in a
more effective piece than one without it.
Eir: This Norse Goddess is associated with medicine, healing and mercy.
Mainly attributed as a physician. She has stirred a good deal of controversy throughout the ages as so little is known, or written of her.
Healing is, however a key issue here and, once again, a recurring theme. You'll notice that she's the only female in the list aside from the female aspect of Thoth.
There are also relations to hygiene that are of issue. Eir was called upon on the field of battle and was considered as a chooser of the slain or Valkyrie.
Deciding who will heal and who will die. In this way she's seen as presiding over the birth of children and the healing thereafter.
Eir has been mentioned in very few writings throughout the ages. Yet still holds her place in the science of healing, protection and knowledge.
Cynocephalus: This word literally means dog headed or head of a dog in Latin and also Greek. It was also synonymous with the ape as a dog faced creature.
Especially the sacred baboon in the Egyptian culture. The closest we come to a God is the early Egyptian Sacred baboon bearing the face of a dog.
In early Greece there are mentions of tribes or clans that carried this trait as a genetic appearance from generation to generation and even a particular island that had this group
of dog faced people on it.
However as we investigate the chronicles of history we find a good deal of Gods that were depicted with the head of a dog.
So cynocephalus may not be shown here as only a particular God but the depiction of many with the face of a dog.
You may be surprised that Christian Saint Christopher was also depicted in this way and fabled to have met the Christ child then later rewarded with human appearance after
carrying him across a river.
